Weight Reduction Exercise Plan
Your pet is overweight,
what do you do now?
It is important that you visit your veterinarian. Your veterinarian will evaluate your companion's weight, discuss possible causes, and give you an idea of how much weight loss is recommended or establish a starting point. Once your companions weight loss goal is established, a specific weight loss plan should be outlined to get your companion where they need to be. Your veterinarian can also evaluate if there are any health reasons that may inhibit you from starting such a plan. Your veterinarian will help you decide what to feed your companion. Either reducing the amount you are currently feeding or changing to a weight loss diet could be discussed.
Exercise your companion more often! Exercise will improve your companion's muscle tone and metabolism. We have developed an exercise routine that will help improve your companion's weight and overall health. Typically, we start with short walks and then gradually increase the distance and/or the speed of the walks. This may be combined with playing games like fetch or other healthy activities. (Check out our exercise plan for more details.)
Monitor your companion's weight. Chart your companion's weight to see what progress has been made. Your veterinarian should weigh your companion monthly until they reach their ideal weight.
Dogs that are overweight are more susceptible to illnesses, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and other debilitating problems. The extra weight your companion is carrying puts added strain on thier joints and back, which can lead to arthritis.
Keep your companion around longer.
